Bettie Marie Combs, of Mexia, passed away on May 8, 2018, at her residence, with family at her side, after a lengthy battle with bone issues and dementia. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 11, at Jones Funeral Services Chapel in Mexia. The Rev. Jeff Wright officiated. Interment followed at Mexia Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, May 10, at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers were J.T. Barnett, Jason Woodall, Cody Woodall, Jeff Woodall, Keith Smith and Aaron Glenn.
Bettie was born Feb. 7, 1935, to Sally Pauline and John Dabney in Mexia. Bettie, our Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and friend to many, will be missed by all who knew her. Anyone who ever met her loved her. She just had a loving, giving spirit that caused you to love her in return.
Bettie started her adult life at an early age by marrying a young, widowed dad, Alva S. Woodall, with two sons. Bettie’s family grew to 5 children before becoming a widow herself. Bettie later married Tom Combs with two children of his own.
Bettie’s life revolved around her children, her church and the Lord. Bettie started her relationship with the Lord as a child at Northside Baptist Church in Mexia and finished her race on this earth as a member of the same church (with a 23-year interruption of living in Houston).
Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, Sally Pauline Hyde and John Dabney; brother, Freddy Dabney; and husbands, Alva S. Woodall and Thomas Combs. She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Peavyhouse and husband John, and Brenda Kennedy and husband Kenneth; brother Stanly Glenn “Bud” Gregory and wife Charlotte; children Alvie “Butch” and Aurora Woodall, of Mexia, Jimmy and Debbie Woodall, of Deer Park, Theresa McDonald, of Mexia, Jerry Woodall, of Mexia, Tonya and Randy Barnett, of Mexia, Cindy Pavelra and Donnie, of Waco, and Mike and Cheryl Combs, of Waco; grandchildren Jeffery Woodall and wife Linda, of Deer Park, Stacey Glenn and husband, Aaron, of Deer Park, Billy McDonald and wife Brenda, of Houston, Cindy Hallmark and husband Brian of New Mexico, Misty Minner and husband Keith, of Michigan, Cody Woodall and wife Jennifer, of Wortham, Jason Woodall, of Fairfield, Michelle Woodall, of Mexia, Ashley Steenken and husband Tyler, of Brenham, Amanda Barnett and fiancé Josh Rios, of Temple, J.T. Barnett, of Mexia, Dwayne and wife Amy Pavelka, and Rebecca Pavelka, of Waco, Josh Combs and Krislyn Combs; as well as 29 great-grandchildren.
